Notes from the team:

This is an in-person ham radio exam session open to the public; it will take place in Room 1-150 on MIT's campus. Walk-in applicants are welcome, though if you are planning to attend, it will help the session run more efficiently if you pre-register.

MIT community members with campus access should arrive at 1-150 at 7:30pm.

Anyone without unescorted access to MIT's campus should wait outside the main entrance doors at 77 Massachusetts Ave. for one of your Volunteer Examiners to escort you inside at 7:30pm. There should be a sign posted on one of the doors indicating that you're in the right place. Please be on time, though if you are late, the sign will include a phone number to call for someone to come let you in.

If any of the following categories applies to you, your exam is FREE!

  • You are under 18
  • You are a current high school or college student
  • You are a veteran or an active duty member of the US military
  • You are a VE upgrading your license to Amateur Extra Class

If none of the above categories apply to you, the exam fee is $10. If you pre-register, you should receive an e-mail from us within a day including payment instructions. Otherwise, the exam fee is payable in cash at the exam session, or by credit or debit card.

NOTE: If you register using a Yahoo! e-mail address, all e-mail we send you is likely to end up in your spam folder because Yahoo! consistently misclassifies it. Since we need to be able to communicate with you reliably by e-mail, we recommend that if you have an e-mail address with a different provider, you use that. If you must use a Yahoo! address, please remember to check your spam folder regularly.

You will need to bring ID to the exam session. It is strongly preferable that this be a government-issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license or learner's permit, passport, etc.). If you do not have a government-issued ID, at the discretion of your VEs, you may be allowed to provide two other forms of ID with your name on them, one of which must be an unexpired photo ID (for example, a current MIT ID and a debit card may be acceptable).

You will need an FCC Registration Number (FRN) to take an exam. If you do not already have one, the exam registration process will guide you through the process of obtaining one. You may also choose to register for it in advance by visiting the FCC's CORES website.

If you have passed another ham radio license exam recently and the corresponding license has not yet been issued, please bring both the original and a photocopy of your Certificate of Successful Completion of Exam (CSCE).

You will take your exam on a touchscreen tablet that we will provide. We have a limited number of tablets available; depending on attendance at the session, you may have to wait a short while until one is available. Exam administration with tablets is much speedier than the traditional paper format, even though the exams are the same. If you would truly prefer to take your exam on paper, let us know and we may be able to accommodate you.

If you would like to use a calculator during your exam, please bring one to the session. You may use any non-network-connected calculator you like, but you will be required to demonstrate to us that it is completely cleared of all memory and storage. Thus, if your calculator is more sophisticated than a 4-function calculator, it would be wise to figure out how to perform a full reset on it before the exam session. If you do not know how to clear your calculator, we may help you figure it out (possibly after making some bad jokes). If we also cannot figure out how to clear your calculator, you will not be allowed to use it.

Please contact ham-exam-signup@mit.edu with any questions about this exam session.

If you need to cancel your registration, please e-mail us as soon as possible so that we can accommodate someone else waiting to take an exam. If you plan to take more than one exam element, we would also appreciate you e-mailing us a heads-up so that we can plan resources and timing appropriately.
